John T. Casteen, III Diversity - Equity - Inclusion Leadership Award
About the Award
In 2010, The Office of the Vice President and Chief Officer for Diversity and Equity at the University of Virginia established the John T. Casteen, III Diversity - Equity - Inclusion Leadership Award. The award recognizes and honors individual members of the University community who best demonstrate exemplary leadership in the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion at the University of Virginia or in the local community.
The selection committee seeks to honor one student, one staff and one faculty member from among the University of Virginia, UVA Health and University of Virginia’s College at Wise communities.

Candidates must be a current student, faculty, or staff member at the University of Virginia, UVA Health or the University of Virginia’s College at Wise.
The nominees/recipients must have demonstrated a deep commitment and distinct passion for diversity, equity, and inclusion at the University of Virginia or local community; an exemplary leadership role in increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion at the University of Virginia or local community; and achievement of a significant and quantifiable impact on diversity, equity, and inclusion at the University of Virginia or local community. Group or team nominations will not be accepted.

A working group of the University’s Diversity Council will serve as the selection committee for the John T. Casteen, III Diversity - Equity - Inclusion Leadership Award.
- Nomination Process

Anyone may nominate or self-nominate a candidate for the John T. Casteen, III DEI Leadership Award. Nominations must include the following documents by February 14, 2025 to be eligible for consideration:
1. Nomination Form
2. Nomination Letter (1) providing a comprehensive overview of the candidate’s leadership and contributions toward diversity, equity, and inclusion at the University of Virginia or local community.
3. Letters of Support (2) highlighting the candidate’s leadership and contributions toward diversity, equity, and inclusion at the University of Virginia or local community. At least one letter of support must be from outside the nominee's department.
Recognition
2024 award winners received a $1,500 award, and a commemorative plaque, and their accomplishments were announced in Amplify.
