At UVA, we believe data can be a tool to advance equity and well-being. We are mindful of the relationship between the use of data and the people and places impacted by our shared work. We seek to proactively build evidence that guides actionable change in our organization. Achieving this requires thinking critically about the creation and use of data, understanding why certain data matter and to whom, and how data are collected and analyzed. In recognizing that data are not neutral, and that quantitative data alone cannot fully reflect lived experiences, we seek to engage a community-and person-centered approach in our work.

Key Projects & Partnerships

Our team works with offices and departments from all around the University, including UVA Health and UVA Wise, to help build the evidence base for purposeful transformation. You can access information from some of our key projects and partnerships below:

Student Belonging

The Office for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is working in partnership with the Office for Institutional Research and Analytics to better understand the student experience at UVA. Undergraduate and graduate students participate in a bi-annual survey of the Student Experience in the Research University (SERU). Public facing dashboards from this research effort are on the IRA website. Additional dashboards and factor analysis are available for the UVA community of practice focused on the student experience. Contact Rachel Spraker at [email protected] to learn more about these efforts.

Departmental Dashboards

These dashboards support equity-focused curriculum review for departments and include multi-year course level performance by key aggregate demographics. The dashboards were built through a partnership among the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE), the Office of Institutional Research and Analytics, and the Office for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. They are designed for use by directors of undergraduate programs, department chairs, and other departmental administrators in partnership with Academic Deans and Directors for Diversity and Inclusion (ADDIs). To access the dashboards first contact your ADDI about engaging in a departmental equity review process if you haven't already and then request training here. If you have any questions contact Lindsay Wheeler from the CTE at [email protected]

Undergraduate STEM Major Persistence

These dashboards were built in partnership with the Josipa Roksa, Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education. Seeking to advance equitable representation in STEM majors, these dashboards include information on student program interests at the time of admission and their persistence in the field through graduation. There are plans to expand the analysis beyond STEM majors. Please contact Josipa Roksa, [email protected] if you have interest in learning more about these dashboards.

Faculty Pipeline Dashboard

These dashboards provide information on University faculty representation in comparison to AAU averages as well as the PhD and post-doctorate pipeline by discipline. They are a partnership between the Office for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs. The dashboards are intended to help departments planning for or engaging in hiring to understand more about the demographics of the pipeline in their fields in order to evaluate the effectiveness of faculty recruitment efforts. For more information about these dashboards contact Rachel Spraker at [email protected].
