Statement on the Mass Shooting in Buffalo, NY
May 17, 2022 — The University of Virginia Division for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion condemns the recent anti-Black violence in Buffalo, NY. Our hearts and thoughts are with the grieving families of the ten people whose lives were taken, those injured, and the entire Buffalo community.
We recognize that this most recent example of endemic violence impacts all of us in different ways and seek to express our support for members of the UVA community that are frightened, angered, traumatized, or otherwise negatively impacted by this tragedy. Given the focus of the violence, this may be an incredibly distressing time specifically for our Black students, faculty, staff, local community members, and those who love them and those whose lives have been impacted by gun violence.
If you have been affected by these recent events, please know that you are not alone, and support is available. We encourage you to access support through the following services:
- For Students: Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS)
- For Employees: Faculty and Employee Assistance Program (FEAP)
- Mental Health Resources from UVA Health
All of us must actively participate in ensuring an inclusive and safe environment for all members of our community and our neighbors.
During this difficult time please take good care of yourself and of each other.
